The week of travel exhibitions in St. Petersburg ended on October 16th: INWETEX-CIS Travel Market 2009, SPAS 2009, MICE Industry 2009 and the St. Petersburg Tourism and Spas Forum were closed. Three days of intense negotiations and meetings are over: the Exhibitions' participants summed up the summer season, discussed pressing issues, adjusted their plans and prepared proposals for the new winter season.

Despite the difficult economic situation in the country, the Exhibition confirmed its status as one of the largest exhibitions in tourist and spa sector of the North-West of the Russian Federation. The International Travel Exhibition INWETEX-CIS Travel Market provided an opportunity for travel specialists to discuss pressing issues, bringing together tourism experts from different countries and Russian regions.

The grand opening was held on October 14th at the stand of St. Petersburg Administration. The opening ceremony was attended by Maxim Sokolov, Chairman of the Committee on Investments and Strategic Projects of the St. Petersburg Administration; Andrey Tyutyunnik, Head of the Office for Analysis and Organisation of Hotel and Tourism Activities of the Federal Tourism Agency of the Ministry of Sports, Tourism and Youth Politics of Russia; Marianna Ordzhonikidze, Head of the Office for Tourism of the Committee for Investments and Strategic Projects of the St. Petersburg Administration; Tatyana Gavrilova, Head of the Office for Tourism of the Committee for Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Leningrad Region; Sergey Shpilko, President of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RUTI); Tamara Vlasova, President of the National Tourism Academy; Mr. Ismail Abdul Hameed Amir, tourism attache of the Republic of Egypt in Russia; Lubor Bartos, Consul General of the Czech Republic in St. Petersburg; Boleslav Yatvetski, Head of the Representative Office of the Embassy of Israel in St. Petersburg and Sergey Trofimov, President of RESTEC® Group.

Opening the Exhibition, Maxim Sokolov, the Chairman of the Committee for Investments and Strategic Projects of St. Petersburg emphasized that: "the representativeness and activity of companies clearly indicates an improvement in the economic situation at the world market". President of RUTI Sergey Shpilko, in turn, noted that: "INWETEX is the nation's oldest and most favourite show demonstrating positive development dynamics year in and year out.

At the official opening ceremony, Lyudmila Ivanova, CEO of CJSC "St. Petersburg Express" was awarded the Medal of Merit for the Travel Industry - an award of the National Tourism Academy.

Welcoming words expressed on behalf of the city and the industry, were supported by other participants of the ceremony. The warm atmosphere of the official opening was retained during the press conference titled Travel Market in the New Environment: Trends and Prospects which was attended by Andrey Tyutyunnik, Marianna Ordzhonikidze, Sergey Shpilko, Sergey Korneev, Lubor Bartos and Sergei Trofimov.

INWETEX-CIS Travel Market 2009

The INWETEX-CIS Travel Market 2009 Exhibition became a crosspoint of business interests of travel specialists from different countries and Russian regions. The unique nature of this Exhibition is due to its integrated approach enabling the creation of an exceptional product meeting the requirements of most demanding travel industry specialists: a comprehensive exhibition combining capabilities of incoming, outgoing, domestic and business travel, and a busy agenda of the Tourism and Spas Forum.

Proposals for the new travel season of 2009 were introduced by 467 companies from 35 countries, including: national offices, tour operators, travel agents, tourist associations, administrations of cities and regions, spas, accommodations, and the media. Proposals of museums, educational centers and professionals in the field of business travel were also available at the Exhibition.

According to the long tradition, INWETEX-CIS Travel Market 2009 was attended by regional administrations and city departments: Committee for Investments and Strategic Projects of St. Petersburg, Administration of the Leningrad Region, Committee for Tourism of Moscow, Narva City Department, Administration of Smolensk, Committee for International Relations and Tourism Development of the Arkhangelsk Region, Department of Physical Education, Sports and Tourism of the Vladimir Region, Tourism Committee of the Vologda Region, State Tourism Agency of the Kaluga Region, Ministry of Economic Development of Karelia, Committee for Culture, Tourism and Archives of the Novgorod Region, Department of Culture and Archives of the Orel Region, State Committee for Economic Development of the Pskov Region, Tourism Committee of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area - Yugra, Department of Industry, Business, Consumer Market and Tourism of the Yaroslavl Region.

Regular exhibition participants include such tour operators as Aerotravel-Club, Anex Tour, Aurinkomatkat, Calypso, Tez Tour, Versa, Jet Travel St. Petersburg, Capital Tours, Kit Finance, Classic Travel, Natalie Tours, Neva, Nevo-Style, Club, Russian Express, PAKTUR, Petropolitana, Petrotur Service, Council of Tourism of St. Petersburg, Solvex, Soleans, Expo-tour, Etoile and other. Official partners of the Exhibition were represented by Sandals & Beaches hotel chain and Condor airlines.

The rich potential of the North-Western region attracted over 176 foreign companies from the Republic of Belarus, Germany, Greece, Dominican Republic, Dubai, Egypt, India, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, Panama, Poland, Slovenia, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Japan, etc.

Egypt became the partner country of INWETEX-CIS Travel Market 2009.
For the first time, the Exhibition was attended by the Ministry of Israel and the official representative of Gambia in Russia - Novatsiya Company.

The Museums and Tourism exhibition section traditionally presented leading museums of St. Petersburg, Moscow and the regions. The museum-monument of St. Isaacs Cathedral, the All-Russia Museum of A.S. Pushkin, the State Museum of History of Moscow, the State Museum of History of Religion, the Museum of Political History of Russia, the Yasnaya Polyana museum-estate of L.N. Tolstoy and others presented their proposals for travel agencies and residents of the city.

The Education in Tourism section have gathered professionals in the field of training specialists for the travel industry and became an innovation that surely caught on at the Exhibition. Educational programs and proposals were presented by professional colleges and higher education institutions of the city.
Traditionally, the results of the Meeting Place - St. Petersburg children's drawing competition that had for many years been supported by CJSC "St. Petersburg Express" were announced.

The best of 21 paintings created by young students of children's art schools of St. Petersburg were chosen by open ballot. The winners and participants received valuable prizes and mementos from the Exhibition participants.

This year's INWETEX-CIS Travel Market Exhibition became a meeting place for 10,000 visitors, over 7,000 of them being specialists from different countries and Russian regions.

The business program of the Exhibitions and the Tourism and Spas Forum included presentations by foreign countries, national offices and companies participating in the event. The 12th Congress of the Russian Union of Travel Industry on October 14 included a session of the Road Transport Commission of RUTI and an open meeting of the Commission on Incoming Tourism of RUTI.

Another two specialised events were held at one exhibition venue along with INWETEX-CIS TRAVEL MARKET 2009: Spas 2009 15th Anniversary Specialised Exhibition and MICE Industry 3rd Specialised Exhibition.

SPAS 2009

For over 15 years, the Spas 2009 Exhibition has been traditionally representing potential of Russian and foreign spa sectors to international and domestic travel markets. The anniversary exhibition had new targets, with the major one requiring drawing attention of professionals to the domestic tourism market and promoting the development of spa activities, especially in the financial and economic crisis.

Joint efforts aimed at advancing the spa industry, arrangement of a unique display most fully reflecting the capacities of spa, fitness and therapeutic recreation and providing for the communication between industry experts and travel industry professionals strengthened the relations between the spa sector representatives of the world and Russia and ensured support for the spa industry in health improvement of the nation.

The Exhibition was attended by 71 spa companies of Russia and CIS countries. For the first time, spas from the republic of Belarus also took part in the project.

The Administration of Caucasian Mineral Waters organised a collective stand of the leading spa enterprises: best spas of the region were represented on the area of 100 sq. meters. The Administration of Caucasian Mineral Waters received a commemorative anniversary medal as an honorary member of the SPA 2009 15th Specialised Exhibition.

The Administration of the spa city of Anapa and 'Spas of Anapa' Spa Association for the first time at the Exhibition organised a collective stand and gathered 10 leading health facilities of the spa that represented their city and its recreational capacities.

The stand of the Association of Spas of the North-West represented the leading health resorts of the North-West: health centers, recreation bases, rehabilitation and recreation centers.

MICE Industry

The priorities of St. Petersburg include active development of the congresses and business travel industry, ensuring the growth of the region's economy, expansion of political and cultural relations between participants of the event and introduction of the city to the international market of business travel.

The MICE Industry Exhibition being held jointly with INWETEX-CIS Travel Market for three years already brought together leaders of business travel and created an own platform for communication with potential customers.

30 companies took part in the project, including: Marriott Hotel Group, Hotel Moskva, Baltic Star Hotel, BERMAN - incentives and events, Gallery Hotel and others. As a part of MICE Industry, proposals for organisers of business trips were also presented by theatrical venues of the city, such as the Music Hall and Priyut Komedianta theatre.

Within the framework of the Exhibition for trade visitors only, there was held an international conference MICE: Innovative Industry in the Economic Space of North-West of Russia specially organised by CJSC "St. Petersburg Express", the Faculty of Humanities of the Bonch-Bruevich St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications, RESTEC® Events, NNIU Exhibition Research Centre, North-Western regional office of the Russian Union of Travel Industry supported by the Baltic International Business School of Business Travel Industry.

The conference was attended by over 60 representatives from companies, the industry organisations, universities and governmental agencies related to the development of the business networking industry in St. Petersburg, Leningrad region and abroad.

Summarizing it may safely be said that INWETEX-CIS Travel Market, SPAS 2009, MICE Industry and the Tourism and Spas Forum clearly demonstrated the appeal and huge potential of travel resources of St. Petersburg and Russia as a whole, producing a positive impact on the expansion of international and interregional relations.

The events were supported by the Committee for Investments and Strategic Projects of St. Petersburg, the Committee for Economic Development, Industrial Policy and Trade of St. Petersburg, the Committee for Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Leningrad Region, the Russian Union of Travel Industry, the National Tourist Association and the Association of Workers of Tourist and Excursion Companies of St. Petersburg. The general information partner of the Week of Travel Exhibitions was represented by Metro newspaper.
