Forestry complex of the North-Western Federal District
North-West Federal District possesses about 60% of the forest
resources of European part of Russia and 12% of all Russia's forests.
North-West Federal District timber stock is about 10 bln cubic meters with over
65% of the most precious coniferous types of timber. Annual cut equals to 83
mln cubic meters and is utilized for almost 40% (average parameters for Russia
- 22%). Forest and industry complex plays an important role in the North-West
Federal District economy. Its share in the total industrial production volume
of the region is about 13%. In some regions making part of the North-West Federal
District the number is 40%.
The North-West Federal District share in the Russian wood and paper production
is as following: paper and cardboard - 64%, plywood - 41%, cutting devices -
32%, wood chipboard - 29%, fiberboard - 22%.
St.Petersburg is an administrative capital of the North-West Federal District,
its largest industrial, trade and marine center. Due to its geographical closeness
to Europe, the city serves as a link between Russian and western businesses.
St.Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast host over 3500 companies of woodworking and
furniture industry, as well as the leading branch educational establishment
- St.Petersburg State Forestry Academy named after S.M.Kirov.
