Metallurgy,
metalworking and tool sector are the foundations supporting industry in
whole and are of considerable importance for Russia's economy.
St. Petersburg is a large industrial center. The city manufactures
about 3% of all products made in Russia. St. Petersburg and Leningrad
Oblast hold the third place in Russia with regard to industrial output,
being only behind Moscow and the oil-producing region of Tyumen. From
the administrative point of view St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast are
separate federal subjects, but as the Leningrad Oblast's territory surrounds
the city of St. Petersburg they can be considered as single economic environment.
St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast make up a dynamically
developing region, which is one of the leading Russian regions with regard
to investment activity, according to the study of independent agencies.
This is facilitated by a unique geopolitical position, natural resource,
production, research and intellectual potential. In 2001 the city received
114 million dollars of direct investments. For the same period Leningrad
Oblast attracted about 238 million dollars in investments. In 2001 St.
Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast together accounted for 7% of all direct
investments in Russia.
Machine building and metalworking make up over 30% of the
city's products. Now St. Petersburg is one of the main consumers of metal
as there is a large number of machine building and machine-tool enterprises
on the one hand, and large scale construction on the other. That is why
the St. Petersburg specialized exhibitions "Metallurgy", "Casting",
"MWTE" and "Tools", making up a unified block of industrial
shows, are very important.
In April 2003 the "Metallurgy" exhibition will
be held already for the 5th time. In the previous years the show grew
by over 5 times: the first show in 1998 had 31 exhibitors, the 2002 event
attracted over 150 exhibitors.
The coming year of 2003 will be very important for St. Petersburg
and will positively influence all events held in the city. The 300th anniversary
of St. Petersburg is a large event not only for Russia but also for the
whole world.
Foreign countries consider St. Petersburg as gateway to
Russia, a city with wide opportunities for development of international
cooperation in different sectors, a city with favorable conditions for
investments, a city assisting to economic development in Russia's Northwest,
and finally a cultural center of the world significance.
To expose St. Petersburg's tercentenary to the world public,
business and cultural circles of different countries, domestic and foreign
investors is to draw attention to economic, scientific, technological,
industrial and cultural prospects of the city itself, and the Northwest
region and Russia in whole.
